AHA vs BHA: Multi-Tasking Chemical Exfoliants

What are some of the best combination of acids for oily, acne-prone skin?⠀

We all know how AHAs can be power exfoliators with BHAs working slightly differently to decongest and help keep our skins clear.⠀

Here is a quick recap above (from my blog Acids 101 Infographic 2017 with a few updates). The biggest update is that we now need to recognise that Salicylic Acid is not completely PH dependent and can work at low % concentrations such as 0.5% . For those that experience drying of the skin and irritation with low PH/ high % SA products this will be great news and many South Korea products do generally use less than 0.5% SA (due to regulatory requirements). Thank you for the forever generous @kindofstephen for sharing this new research with us. More on Salicylic Acid to come. ⠀

I also used to use Paula’s Choice 2% BHA obsessively with a separate acid product for evening use yet over time I have found merging the two into one product has easily allowed me to streamline my routine preventing too many layers in the morning or avoid pilling trouble. In other words, I love a good AHA/BHA combo. ⠀

Who else prefers a combo of AHAs + BHAs?⠀
Or are you still a 2% BHA single treatment fan?⠀
