Superoxide Dismutase

Superoxide dismutase SOD

I will be focusing on a naturally occurring antioxidant in the body called Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) which is found in our dermis and epidermis. Its primary function as an enzyme is to fight and break down a highly damaging free radical called superoxide. This is the most common type found in the body (Rahman, 2007). ⠀

Where else can SOD also be found? In plants like barley grass, broccoli, Brussel sprouts and cabbage etc.⠀

SKIN BENEFITS:
Anti-inflammatory⠀

Protects against UV rays⠀

Reduces hyperpigmentation⠀

Prevents wrinkles, fine lines and age spots⠀

Wound healing⠀

Softens scar tissue ⠀

STUDIES:
Under conditions of oxidative stress, SOD prevents cellular damage by degrading superoxide. (Yasui and Baba, 2006). ⠀⠀
Apart from its antioxidant/anti-aging properties, studies also showed that SOD helps to reduce hyperpigmentation. SOD also shows inhibitory effect on UVB-induced melanin production. (Chang et al, 2014), which makes it a perfect addition to sunscreens.⠀

In other studies, oral supplements that contain SOD together with other antioxidants have shown significant clinical benefits in the reduction of facial redness and hyperpigmentation. (Goldberg et al, 2016) Some showing significant clinical benefits with improvements in wrinkling, fine lines, skin moisture, elasticity and overall photodamage when combined with other nutricosmetics (Goldberg and Crysler, 2014).⠀

CAUTION:
SOD is easily destroyed by stomach acids so it is important to choose oral supplements that are either enteric coated or sublingual.

MY EXPERIENCE:
Currently, I am taking ‘Vitamin Code Women’ (a raw whole food multivitamin with live probiotics and enzymes) manufactured by @gardenoflife. It contains 23 organically grown fruits and vegetables that add supporting antioxidants, vitamins and nutrient cofactors as well as a RAW probiotic & enzyme blend. It contains 3 powerhouse antioxidants – SOD, CoQ10 and Glutathione. These multivitamins (Pharmaceutical Grade) are created from highly absorbable raw organic food that our bodies can easily digest ensuring our bodies get more of the nutrients it needs.

Now, let’s hope it’s working some serious health, youth and wellbeing magic behind the scenes 😉

Next up on my list is to supplement my UV protection by adding a SOD mist (Deciem SOD or De Mamiel SOD mist) – Any recommendations out there?
