Q&A – What does Chemical Exfoliation do? ……“ is it thinning out my skin?”
.
The last time I talked in length about acids was way back in 2017 and since then I have so many new followers so I thought it might be a good time to revisit some of the topics I have discussed in the past. One of the biggest questions I often get asked is are acids “thinning out my skin” people who ask me this question are usually but not always experiencing some bout of “over-exfoliation” and sensitivity.
You can take a look at the slide for a brief explanation on how chemical exfoliation performs many great roles in maintaining healthy-looking skin yet the real takeaway here is to note that although we sometimes see the outer layer as being ”dead” skin cells (ready to be sloughed away) we need to remember this outer layer is not entirely dead and plays an important role in our skin barrier defense so over-exfoliating/removing this layer can leave the outermost layer of the skin vulnerable. Learning to listen to your skin needs and tolerance levels will help you make sure that you find the right acid for you at the right frequency for your skin.
